Find Hidden Gems of the Finger Lakes Region

Visit a State Park or State Forest

Government employees aren’t always seen in the best light, but that’s because people haven’t met our amazing NYS Parks staff! Josh Teeter, an Environmental Educator, is one of our hidden gems in the Finger Lakes region.

A Hidden Gem Government Employee

Josh has dedicated his career to connecting people to nature, fostering stewardship, and promoting sustainability. Whether leading outdoor education programs from Lake Ontario to Fillmore Glen’s hidden waterfalls, combating invasive species, restoring habitats, or monitoring pollinators, his work and the work of his team ensures the ecological integrity of New York State’s parklands.

Josh’s storytelling approach, rooted in experiential learning and constructive questioning, brings the outdoors to life for visitors. From tales of glacial geology to the ecosystem-saving power of hemlocks, he sparks curiosity and connection. His innovative projects, which inform patrons of the agency’s mission and promote accessible park transformations, exemplify his vision for inclusivity and sustainability.

“We’ve got something for everyone, every season–whether it’s hiking to breathtaking waterfalls, exploring miles of interconnected trails, or discovering hidden gems off the beaten path. Our parks offer stunning natural beauty and unique experiences, all while preserving the environment for future generations.” – Josh Teeter

He is deeply embedded in his community, championing local food systems, supporting artisan producers (he recommends you check out Wide Awake Bakery in Ithaca!), and promoting off-the-beaten-path tourism to balance conservation and recreation. Josh creates unforgettable experiences that inspire people to cherish and protect the natural world.

Look for Josh at his home park, Taughannock Falls State Park, in Trumansburg. He’d be happy to share some of his favorite places to visit and answer any questions about the natural world he loves.
