Finger Lakes Region: A Destination Like No Other

The Finger Lakes region in upstate New York spans nearly 9,000 square miles, is home to 11 glacial lakes, rolling hills, and small towns that each have their own character and charm. This region is one of the most scenic and diverse destinations in the Northeast United States, known for world-class New York wineries, deep-rooted history, and abundance of outdoor adventures.

The finger-shaped lakes, for which the region gets its name, were carved by glaciers over 10,000 years ago, creating a landscape perfect for boating, fishing, and exploring. Seneca Lake, the deepest of them all, plunges to over 600 feet, while Skaneateles Lake boasts some of the clearest water in the country.

Beyond the lakes, there’s something to enjoy in every season. Whether you’re setting out on a scenic drive, paddling along a peaceful shoreline, or discovering a hidden waterfall, every moment here feels like an invitation to explore more.

A History as Deep as the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region is steeped in centuries of history, shaped by both its natural landscape and the people who have called it home. The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, one of the oldest participatory democracies in the world, originated here, leaving a lasting cultural legacy.

In the 19th century, the Erie Canal transformed the region into a hub of commerce and innovation, linking it to major cities and fueling economic growth. The area also played a pivotal role in the abolitionist movement and women’s suffrage, with figures like Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony leading the charge. Today, this deep-rooted history is preserved in museums, landmarks, and heritage sites throughout the Finger Lakes.

The Iconic Finger Lakes Region

Located in central New York, the Finger Lakes are named for their long, narrow shape, resembling hand-carved grooves in the land. The region is home to 11 lakes, but five stand out as the most iconic:
