A Passionate Guide to the Finger Lakes Fishing Experience
“Fishing is about staying curious, trying new things, and never losing the joy of discovery.” Kurt Hoefig, Fishing Guide
Kurt Hoefig isn’t just a fishing guide; he’s a storyteller, a teacher, and a steward of the Finger Lakes. His deep appreciation for these natural treasures and his dedication to sharing their beauty have made him a beloved figure among fishing enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. With an approach rooted in education and sustainability, Kurt embodies the values that make outdoor adventures memorable and meaningful.

A transplant from New Jersey, Kurt fell in love with the Finger Lakes for their unparalleled natural beauty and abundant recreation opportunities. “Growing up with limited access to bodies of water, I was amazed by the size and variety of these lakes,” he recalls. Today, Kurt’s guiding focuses on helping others discover that same sense of awe, whether they’re seasoned anglers chasing trout or first-timers eager to try their hand at casting a line.
“One of my favorite parts of the job is when clients send me photos of the fish they’ve caught later, thanking me for what I taught them. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their progress,” Kurt shares. His trips aren’t just about catching fish; they’re about learning, bonding, and creating lasting memories.
While Kurt welcomes all fishing enthusiasts, his business emphasizes catch-and-release practices to preserve the lakes’ delicate ecosystems. This conservationist mindset stems from lessons learned early in life. “My dad taught me the importance of protecting fisheries. Even though the Finger Lakes are resilient, I always try to fish sustainably,” he says. For Kurt, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a way of life. From keeping fewer fish than the legal limit to teaching clients about responsible fishing practices, Kurt leads by example.
The diversity of the Finger Lakes is a cornerstone of Kurt’s enthusiasm. Each lake offers its own unique challenges and rewards. Whether guiding for trout on Cayuga or exploring the bass-rich waters of Otisco, Kurt relishes the chance to adapt and grow. His year-round dedication extends to winter fishing, which, though less popular among clients, provides some of the best conditions for him to hone his craft.

Beyond fishing, Kurt treasures the variety of people he meets through his work. His clients range from grandparents introducing the next generation to the joys of fishing to college students seeking an unforgettable experience on the water. The shared excitement and energy keep every day fresh and fulfilling.
At its heart, Kurt’s work is about gratitude and discovery. “There’s always something new to learn or explore,” he says. This curiosity and joy fuel his commitment to the lakes and the people he serves, ensuring that the Finger Lakes remain a cherished destination for anglers far and wide.
A Guiding Legacy of Adventure and Conservation
“It’s very diverse – warm water lakes, deep water, cold lakes, and all within an hour’s drive you can hit all of these things.” Mark Moskal, Summit to Stream Adventures
When you meet Mark Moskal, owner and primary guide of Summit to Stream Adventures, one thing becomes abundantly clear: his passion for the outdoors runs as deep as the Finger Lakes themselves. Raised in the heart of Central New York, Mark has lived a life of stewardship, adventure, and profound respect for the natural world, focused on the diverse waters of upstate New York.
From lakes and rivers to streams and ponds, this area offers a rich variety of fish species—rainbow trout, brown trout, salmon, smallmouth and largemouth bass, pike, pickerel, and even muskie. The changing seasons bring dynamic opportunities, with spawning rainbow trout in the spring, brown trout in inland streams during the summer, and a fall influx of salmon and brown trout in the tributaries of the big lakes.

For Mark, fishing isn’t just a profession—it’s a lifelong passion. His father introduced him to fishing at the age of five, and from that moment, he was hooked. Every time he sets out on the water, he’s reminded of childhood adventures, teenage discoveries, and decades of unforgettable moments spent fishing these waters.
Mark is an active member of Trout Unlimited, The Federation of Fly Fishers, The Finger Lakes Trail Conference, and the New York State Guides Association. Mark is also certified in CPR and First Aid by the American Red Cross, and is certified in Basic Water Safety. His goal is to share his passion of the outdoors with all who join him, and help people safely experience all that the Finger Lakes has to offer.
Sustainability is at the heart of Mark’s approach. His fly fishing is strictly catch and release, and, even on the lakes, he enforces responsible limits—ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same thriving fishery. With over 50 years of fishing experience, Mark has developed an unmatched knowledge of these waters, but more importantly, he has a genuine love for sharing his passion with others. Whether guiding a seasoned angler to the perfect fishing spot or introducing a beginner to their first catch, he thrives on the excitement, camaraderie, and joy that fishing brings. For Mark, guiding isn’t just a job—it’s what he was meant to do. It also makes sense for him, because whether he’s working or not, he’d be out on the water anyway.
