Marionettes by Rachel Hennelly
Monroe County
Dates: March 3-10, 2025
Location: Rochester Public Library, 115 South Avenue, Rochester, NY
Rachel Hennelly, Folk Art creator, hand carved, created, and costumed all of her marionettes, harkening back to America’s earliest traditions of handmade art that would be used in performances. This exhibit has entertained thousands of children and adults at venues across New York City. Since Rachel’s passing in 2022, her family has continued to display her work – including the Rochester Public Library.

Visit Murals of Her Voice Carries: Public Art Project

Explore Museum Exhibits at The Strong National Museum of Play

Location: The Strong National Museum of Play, One Manhattan Square, Rochester, NY
The Strong is for kids and kids-at-heart. Current exhibits include “Capturing Play,” a selection of toy cameras and figures collected by documentary photographer Martha Cooper, “Black Doll Designers,” outlining the pivotal role that Black designers have played in diversifying toy aisles, and “Material Girl,” giving you a peek inside the closet of America’s favorite doll, Barbie, from grunge to preppy styles and inspirational careers such as astronaut, president, paleontologist and more.

“Grand, Domestic and Truly Comfy”: The Langdon Mansion in Elmira, New York

Location: Chemung County Historical Society, 415 E Water St, Elmira, NY
This exhibition at the Chemung County Historical Society tells the story of the Langdon mansion, the home of one of Elmira’s most prominent and historically significant families. It features numerous period images of the interior as well as furniture, decorative objects, and works of art original to the mansion.

Tour the Women’s Rights National Historical Park
Seneca County
Dates: March 3-10, 2025
Location: Women’s Rights National Historical Park, 136 Fall Street, Seneca Falls, NY
Learn about the story of the first Women’s Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, NY on July 19-20, 1848, during which hundred women and men added their signatures in support of the Declaration of Sentiments. The Visitor Center has two floors of exhibits on the Convention and the history of women’s rights in America, including the “First Wave” statue installation on the ground floor and temporary exhibit “Radical Optimism.” Step inside the Wesleyan Chapel to see where approximately 300 people attended the First Women’s Rights Convention.

“Seeing Equal Rights in NY” at the Equal Rights Heritage Center

Located on the former site of the Women’s Educational and Industrial Union, the Equal Rights Heritage Center features a state-of-the-art exhibition titled “Seeing Equal Rights in NYS” where New York State’s progressive history supporting equality comes to life through interactive displays. Think: songs, speeches, portraits, posters, and videos that showcase how New Yorkers participated in human rights movements, abolition of slavery and women’s rights movement. Outside of the Center, pose with the Harriet Tubman statue!

Tour the National Women’s Hall of Fame

Open on the first floor of the historic Seneca Knitting Mill, the National Women’s Hall of Fame celebrates the achievements of American women, with inductees added every two years. Many of our Brave Women are featured in the Hall.

Visit the Harriet Tubman Home Property

Take a guided tour (must be pre-arranged) of the Harriet Tubman Home property to learn about the 50+ years that Brave Woman Harriet Tubman lived in Auburn, NY. Tours start in the Harriet Tubman Visitor Center for an overview of her life, before seeing the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged and the exterior of her brick house.

Watch the 2016 movie Maudie about an arthritic Nova Scotia woman who works as a housekeeper while honing her skills as an artist, eventually becomes a beloved figure. There are two shows, open to all ages, at the woman-run Auburn Public Theater.

2nd Annual She Shines

Raise a glass with Experience Cortland at the 2nd Annual She Shines on March 6, 5–8:30pm at Homer Hops Brewing! It’s the ultimate night out to toast Cortland County’s powerhouse women in tourism. Attendees can explore a variety of offerings, from handcrafted goods to health and wellness services and stunning artwork from local artists. Try your hand at interactive experiences like tea tastings and candle-making (some experiences require an extra cost, but so worth it!). Sip Homer Hops craft beer and grab a bite from the kitchen while enjoying live tunes.
She Shines will also serve as a fundraising opportunity for the Grace Brown House, a supportive housing residence in Cortland dedicated to providing support and shelter to survivors of domestic violence and their families.
